Dementia and Textiles
I have explored the social and mental benefits of art and textiles processes to aid people living with Dementia, through running textiles workshops with the Alzheimer society at ‘Memory Café’s’ and visiting sheltered communities.
I have witnessed the positive effect that people with dementia encounter from doing art and how can improve their memory. Art is used as a form of expression and a way of articulating feelings and emotions in a non-verbal way.
I used research gathered from the Alzheimer participation groups to create textiles samples and artefacts; aesthetically beautiful representations of connections made between the participants in the workshops which displayed how emotion can be used as a catalyst for memory.
