I used objects to relay memory in workshops for ‘Memory cafés’ with the Alzheimer society. This was inspired by artist Jane Wallis and her project ‘Threads’. Wallis noted that a participant, called Maria, in the ‘Thread’ project was “withdrawn and quiet” but became more engaged when
“her daughter brought a box into the centre containing items of clothing that Maria had made. As she held the garments and looked at them, Maria’s gestural expressions transformed; she seemed to recognise them, to know them. Although subtle, her actions spoke loudly; the objects were part of her.” (Wallace, J, nd)
I am particularly interested in the way that these objects evoked an emotional memory within Maria that allowed her to regain a sense of identity.
